YouTube had announced Picture-in-Picture (PiP) support for its iOS and iPadOS Premium users back in March this year. However, the feature was rolled out only to select iPhone and iPad users. In a recent development, the company has finally released the PiP feature globally to all premium users.
The feature will allow users to continue playback on top of other apps by shrinking the video into a small window that can be dragged to different parts of the screen. Notably, the Picture-in-Picture feature for YouTube is already available for Android users.

YouTube has finally started rolling out Picture-in-Picture support to all iPhone and iPad devices running iOS and iPadOS 15.0 or higher. While the feature will be available only to Premium YouTube members across the globe, everyone in the U.S. using the YouTube app on iPhone and iPad will have access to PiP for non-music content.

With Picture-in-Picture, you can watch YouTube videos in a small mini player while simultaneously browsing other apps on your mobile device. In order to use the feature, simply select a YouTube video to watch and then leave the YouTube app by swiping up from the bottom of your screen, or pressing the home button. The video will continue to play in a mini player. You can choose to move the player across your device’s screen while using other apps.
As for the availability of the feature, you can use Picture-in-Picture to watch content across YouTube with a Premium membership. However, if you are not a premium member of the app, and happen to reside in the United States, you can still use PiP. Do note that you can’t watch certain content, like music videos.
