Apple introduced its latest iPhone 14 series of smartphones last week. The iPhones have been sporting OLED displays for the past few generations but still lacked the cool Always-On display feature, something that Android users have been enjoying for a long time now. Fortunately, the new 2022 models finally debuted the Always-On display mode. However, Apple continues its gatekeeping tendencies, reserving this feature for the “Pro” models only.
The Always-On display feature has been a core feature in Android smartphones for ages. Apple may be late in incorporating this feature but has added some nifty functions that set it apart from the competition. The Always-On mode on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will automatically turn off if the user leaves the iPhone unattended in a room. Apparently, the user needs to be wearing an Apple Watch to use this feature.
According to MacRumors, this feature was spotted by a Youtuber called Felixba. He noticed the feature while he was at Apple’s “Far Out” launch event last week. If the user has the iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro Max paired to the Apple Watch, it will disable the Always-On mode if it detects that the user is not in the room. Reportedly, the iPhones could be utilising the proximity sensors on the Apple Watch for this function. Strangely, Apple had neither named this feature nor mentioned it during the event.
Apple has implemented many such battery-saving measures for the Always-On mode. Similar to Android phones, the iPhone makes use of its proximity sensor to turn off the display completely when it is in the user’s pocket or placed face down on a surface. Furthermore, the OLED panels on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max come with variable refresh rates, which can drop to as low as 1Hz when the Always-On mode is enabled. That’s not all, the Apple A16 Bionic chip sports a new display engine that is reported to manage the Always-On mode efficiently and save battery.
