At the WWDC 2022, Apple showcased a host of updates and devices, including the iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, macOS Ventura, and refreshed MacBooks featuring the M2 chipset. The iPhone maker also announced an upgraded CarPlay, which promises deeper integration with your car. It will bring Apple’s aesthetics to your car, accompanied by improved in-cabin controls.
The next-generation CarPlay update will let you access content via multiple screens within your car. Moreover, it promises improved integration with your vehicle which will allow you to easily adjust climate controls, the radio, and other elements right from CarPlay. Moreover, it will automatically adjust the display to accommodate a variety of screen sizes.
The app will also swap out the factory-set instrument cluster display for CarPlay’s own UI. It will display your vehicle’s speedometer, temperature, and fuel level on the display. Additionally, the next-generation CarPlay brings customisation options via new widgets, skins, and apps.
Apple announced that the latest CarPlay update will be announced in late 2023. Car manufacturers such as Ford, Jaguar, Lincoln, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti, Acura, Land Rover, Audi, Nissan, Volvo, and Porsche are preparing to receive the upgrade.
CarPlay is Apple’s own software platform designed for vehicles. The app saw a wide rollout in 2015. It displays information from the iPhone on the vehicle’s infotainment unit. This allows drivers to safely make phone calls, view Maps, and listen to music while driving. As it is designed to be a hands-free system, it relies on Apple’s personal assistant Siri to perform various functions.
CarPlay can be connected to the vehicle’s infotainment system via the iPhone’s Lightning port or wirelessly in cars that support the system. The setup process is quite straightforward, since the app gets all the information directly from the iPhone.
