The DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) quickly gained popularity in the 1980s owing to its classic car with gullwing type opening doors. The original Delorean, also known internally as the DMC-12, featured in the Back to the Future movies and became an aspirational product.
Now, DMC is all set to revive the classic car in an EV avatar. The new DMC Alpha 5 EV is apparently based on the “Medusa” sedan concept of the 1980’s original DeLorean brand. But, it will sport two gullwing doors similar to the original DMC-12 car to excite the fans.

The company went bankrupt in 1982 and ceased operations, leaving its existing customers high and dry. Later, Stephen Wynne, a British mechanic, acquired the rights to the American DeLorean brand to provide service, replacement parts, and accessories to the owners. They also deal in used and refurbished DeLorean cars from their Houston, Texas facility. Now, with the advent of electric vehicles, the company sees the opportunity to revive itself and also bring its iconic cars back from the past to the future.
DMC Alpha 5: Design, Features
DMC has entrusted the designing of its DMC Alpha 5 electric vehicle to Giorgetto Giugiaro’s ItalDesign studio. Giugiaro was also the man behind the design of the original iron clad DMC DeLorean. The Alpha 5 carries Medusa’s aerodynamic design language. It has minimal character lines just like the Medusa concept. According to DMC, it will come with a drag coefficient of just 0.23.
The muscular flared wheel arches provide it with a wide stance. The shoulder line continues to the doors and meets the front fenders. The headlights are very sleek and are accentuated by big LED DRL strips. It gets two large electrically operated gullwing type doors, which also provide access to the rear passengers. The car gets big alloys with a turbine-like multiple spoke design. At the rear, it comes with tri slat design LED tail-lamps and a sporty diffuser.
The DeLorean Alpha 5 EV will come with dual powerful motors and presumably in an AWD (All Wheel Drive) setup. According to the brand, it will reach 0-60mph in less than three seconds and can do 0-88mph in 4.35 seconds. The top speed is expected to be around 155mph (250km/hr). The car will be loaded with a 100kWh battery pack, which is estimated to offer about 300 miles (482km) of driving range on a single charge.
Pricing is expected to be around $175,000 (approx. ₹1,35,80,000) and it will go against the likes of the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan, and the Mercedes EQS electric sedans. DMC will showcase the car at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance car show in California on August 18 2022. However, you will have to wait till 2024 to get your hands on this car.
