The design is pretty much similar to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 prototype phone, which was designed by ROG Labs. It gets a larger camera island compared to the ROG Phone 5s. The secondary display at the rear of the ROG Phone 6 Pro is also bigger than its predecessor. However, the vanilla ROG Phone 6 makes do with an illuminated logo at the rear. Thankfully, the global variant has gotten rid of the “Tencent Games” branding at the rear, which could have been controversial, especially in India.
Gaming phones are big due to their massive displays, larger battery packs, and active/passive cooling systems. The ROG Phone 6 series is no different, they are big phones and weigh around 240 grams. They sport a large 6.78-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display by Samsung and come with an astonishing 165Hz refresh rate and 720Hz touch sampling rate. Not just gaming, you will be able to enjoy the responsiveness while navigating through the phone and multitasking on a daily basis. Furthermore, it sports a 10-bit panel with 111 percent DCI-P3 coverage, 150 percent sRGB, and a maximum brightness of 1200 nits. The display gets Gorilla Glass Victus protection, which is currently the best in the market.
Both the ROG Phone 6 models are powered by the octa-core Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset built on the TSMC’s 4nm fabrication process. The brand has reportedly employed an improved cooling system that can reduce the CPU temperature by up to 10-degrees Celsius. The glass and metal construction of the device also helps to dissipate the heat faster compared to plastic phones. The ROG Phone 6 will get up to 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage, whereas the ROG Phone 6 Pro will come with 18GB LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB UFS 3.1 memory.
When it comes to the cameras, it gets a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary sensor. The ancillary cameras include a 13MP 125-degree ultrawide shooter and a 5MP macro camera. It misses out on a telephoto sensor, which is a bummer at this price point. There’s a 12MP Sony IMX663 sensor at the front to handle selfie and video calling duties.
The ROG Phone 6 series packs in a host of gaming and entertainment features. It gets improved five magnet dual stereo speakers at the front powered by a Cirrus Logic amplifier for a clear and loud sound experience. The device also comes with an outdoor sound mode that cranks up the volume even higher. It is one of the few flagships to retain the 3.5mm audio jack and boasts of a Qualcomm WCD9385 for Hi-Res output.
The handset features two pressure-sensitive shoulder buttons which are customisable. The haptic motor is improved when compared to the previous iteration to provide enhanced feedback during gaming. The inbuilt screen recorder can record gameplay in Full HD resolution at 120fps. Moreover, it gets an IPX4 sweat/splash resistant body if you get all sweaty during intense gaming sessions.
Other notable features on the device include 11 5G bands, Wi-Fi 6e, Bluetooth v5.2, USB 3.1 Type-C port (side), USB 2.0 Type-C port (bottom), and an in-display fingerprint sensor, among other features. It is powered by a dual-cell 6,000mAh battery coupled with 65W HyperCharge fast charging tech. The phone runs on Android 12 out of the box, with promised two major Android OS upgrades and two years of security patches.
