Samsung took the wraps off its premium foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip 4, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4 at its Unpacked event today. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a successor to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, which was introduced back in August 2021. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 was one of the most desirable flagship smartphones of 2021, owing to its innovative design, features, and compact footprint.
The new Galaxy Z Flip 4 brings some incremental upgrades as it packs in a more powerful processor, an improved hinge design, a larger battery, and fast charging support, among others. Let’s see how it stacks up against its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 below.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 Vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: Comparison
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 received an incredible response in the market and Samsung didn’t want to mess that up by giving it a complete makeover. Hence, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 carries a similar design as its predecessor, albeit with some minor tweaks. The hinge design has been revised to make it more durable compared to the one on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The rounded edges make way for flat sides in this iteration.
The dimensions of the Flip 4 are 165.2 x 71.9 x 6.9mm unfolded, whereas it measures 84.9 x 71.9 x 17.1mm when folded. In comparison, the older Flip 3’s dimensions are 166 x 72.2 x 6.9mm when unfolded and 86.4 x 72.2 x 17.1mm when folded. While the length and the width of the newer device have gone down slightly, the thickness remains exactly the same as before. The weight is now up to 187 grams as opposed to the 183 grams of the Flip 3.

However, the edges around the display have been reduced, making the handset more compact than before. Furthermore, it gets an improved display glass protection. The cover screen is also of the same size and resolution as the Galaxy Z Flip 3. It is a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display with 512 x 260 pixels resolution. The device comes with the latest Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection on the outside as against the Gorilla Glass Victus on the Galaxy Z Flip 3.
The major change in the new foldable smartphone is the new processor. The new Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes with a much more powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset compared to the Snapdragon 888 processor of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The new chipset by Qualcomm is built on TSMC’s 4nm fabrication process and is the company’s most powerful flagship chipset yet. The device is equipped with 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage.
In terms of optics, it gets a new 12MP primary sensor with Dual Pixel AF with OIS, f/1.8 aperture, 1.8um pixel size, and an 83-degree field of view. It is accompanied by the same 12MP ultrawide shooter with a 123-degree field of view and an f/2.2 aperture. Selfie and video calling duties are handled by the same 10MP sensor as before that comes with an f/2.4 aperture and a field of view of 80 degrees.
Some notable features of the device include stereo speakers tuned by AKG, Dolby Atmos, Bluetooth v5.2, Wi-Fi 6, Samsung Knox, dual SIM (Market Dependent), side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and IPX8 water resistance, among others. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 packs in a bigger 3,700mAh battery compared to the 3,300mAh battery pack of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The Flip 3 was criticised heavily for its slow 15W charging support. Fortunately, Samsung has bumped it to 25W, which promises to offer up to 50 percent battery in 30 minutes. It also boasts of an upgraded Wireless Charging 2.0 support. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 runs on One UI 4.1.1 based on Android 12L OS out of the box.
