Sony is silently rolling out an update to enable variable refresh rate (VRR) on its 2021 TVs with the Bravia XR processor. These TVs mostly belong to their flagship lineup and were promised a VRR update sometime last year. Variable refresh rates basically let your TV smooth out any stutters or frame rate drops that may happen while gaming. Sony’s Bravia XR TVs occupy a prominent place in the brand’s TV portfolio and the addition of this particular feature is a welcome move.
These TVs are known for their crisp panels, excellent sound, their packing of the latest Bravia Engine, and more. These models come with the new Google TV UI and have been missing VRR for a very long time. VRR is picking up pace and is being found on various devices, including Android phones and Smart TVs. For users to run VRR on their Sony Bravia TVs, the source device needs to support it. Even Sony’s own PlayStation 5 does not have this feature.

Not just gaming, but casual TV viewing experiences will also benefit from this VRR update. At the moment, only the XR 2021 lineup is getting this particular update, and according to some users, you need to manually check for it in the updates section. This OTA also seems to be region-specific, and most reports of this are coming from the North American region.
