YouTube has been slowly rolling out Picture-in-Picture (PiP) to its iOS app since June last year. However, according to some reports, the company appears to have pulled the plug on PiP for iPhone and iPad. YouTube has now allayed fears of the feature’s demise by announcing that all iOS devices will get PiP support “in a matter of days”, indicating that a wider rollout is imminent.
YouTube stated that PiP is still rolling out and will soon be available across all iOS 15+ devices. This was in response to some users complaining that they received notifications saying the PiP is no longer an experimental feature, following which the function was removed from the app.

9to5Google noted that the “Picture-in-Picture on iOS” experiment is no longer available on YouTube after passing its April 8 end date. Users were notified with a message saying, “The feature you’re trying has been turned off”. However, the report notes that YouTube PiP still works on iOS devices that already had the test enabled. Those who didn’t have it enabled previously, will not be able to access it now.
Picture-in-picture support is available for videos that play on both iPhones and iPads at the system level. However, when it comes to YouTube, the feature leaves a lot to be desired. For instance, the function works on a browser, but not on the native app. However, YouTube Premium users can enjoy PiP via the app as well.
